Project Overview
Baba Supersign fabricated an illuminated onyx display rack for Fillip at The Chanakya, New Delhi. The main challenge was to provide consistent LED backlighting while retaining service access in a location with very limited clearance behind the rack. A side sliding telescopic channel system was therefore incorporated to provide access to the lighting components without requiring conventional rear maintenance space.

Design Challenge & Solution
The available space behind the display rack provided very limited access for conventional LED maintenance. To address this constraint, the illuminated onyx panels were mounted using laterally moving telescopic steel channels, allowing the lighting components to be accessed from the side.
- Uniform Illumination: Achieving even light distribution across the onyx panels to minimise visible hotspots and uneven illumination.
- Maintenance Access: Providing serviceable rear access for LED fixtures in a space so narrow that traditional rear entry was impossible.
To overcome these hurdles, we engineered a telescopic channel system: each illuminated panel is custom sized and mounted on precision sliding channels that extend sideways. This side access mechanism allows technicians to slide panels out laterally for quick LED servicing no need to dismantle surrounding fixtures or sacrifice valuable floor space.
Materials & Execution
- Onyx Stone Panels: Translucent onyx panels were backlit using diffused LED lighting positioned to produce an even illuminated appearance across the stone.
- Telescopic Steel Channels: Side mounted steel channels allow the illuminated panel assembly to move laterally for maintenance access.
- Integrated LED Lighting: LED strips were positioned behind the onyx surfaces to provide diffused illumination through the natural stone.
- Concealed Fixings: Discreet brackets and low profile channel covers maintain the rack’s sleek aesthetic when closed.
